New Password Cracker Speeds up Computer Forensic Investigations
Vogon International has launched a new Password Cracker that will help forensic investigators and law enforcement agencies in their fight against crime and global terrorism. It is also being offered as a service at Vogon’s laboratories for bona fide organisations. The Password Cracker identifies and removes passwords from platter locked hard drives used in laptop computers and will be a major timesaver in field or covert investigation work.
As laptop hard drives have become more secure, investigators have found it harder to access the data using traditional software-based tools, which also typically render a computer unusable after being applied. Vogon International has developed this new hardware-based Password Cracker in response to requests from law enforcement agencies throughout the US and Europe for a solution to this problem.
Vogon’s Password Cracker attaches via the target drive’s own interface and uses a small database to retain the captured password whilst the drive is accessed. After the disk has been imaged, the original passwords can be replaced in an evidentially sound manner to return the hard drive to its original state. Significantly, this can be done without alerting the computer user that their password has been by-passed.
"Capturing the information stored on a computer is the essential first step in any investigation," explained Gordon Stevenson, managing director of Vogon International. "This new password cracker makes accessing data more straight forward, which can save valuable time at an early stage."
The Password Cracker is provided as an optional add-on hardware module to Vogon International’s VBus Modular System, which combines imaging software, write-blocking hardware and the appropriate remote pod to provide connectivity to the relevant hard drives.
