Forensic Medical Institution (FMI) restructures
In accordance with adapting to the laws and procedures of the European Union (EU), the Forensic Medical Institution (FMI) restructured itself.
President of Forensic Medicine Dr. Keramettin Kurt said yesterday that the overhaul would be like "a meeting of the minds, consolidating the latest technology to reveal justice faster, by writing reports as soon as possible".
The following are changes within the FMI:
- Branch managers working in judicial courts will be transferred to hospitals and health institutions hereafter. Officials chose Istanbul as the pilot region.
- Municipal polices are no longer allowed to enter the examination room. They are only responsible for the transportation of forensic medical subjects.
- Reports prepared by the FMI personnel will be delivered in sealed envelope to the Republic's public prosecutor.
- The FMI will also activate additional laboratories; upgrade laboratories in provinces; and use laboratories only as a reference.
One hundred thirty experts work in Forensic Medicine with an additional 170 when considering those employed by universities. The number of cases they annually receive is 600,000. The number for Istanbul alone is 120,000. Kurt mentioned that despite the egregious lack of personnel, FMI was still able to deliver decisions on all but 3,400 cases.
